Three Hours of Bollywood

In the late 90s, the relationship between Pakistan and India softened, and as a result of the new foreign policy, we in Pakistan began to receive Bollywood Music, but for three hours every day. I hardly remember an afternoon not being glued to the television. Those magical three hours transported us somewhere else, and while most of the songs were repeated constantly, we never grew tired. One of my favourite songs was Panjaj Udaas, “Ahista”, a song about falling in slowly and gaining the trust of your beloved. The video of that song was even more lovely. I was only twelve or thirteen years old, but I always imagined myself in that song, a white boy and an Indian girl, and the sacrifices they make for each other.
